“When I look back to my childhood in the 1920s – I grew up on a farm in the interior of Washington State – I see how fortunate I was to have known at an early age that I wanted to be an artist. My uncle Henry came from California to visit us most summers. He did pastel chalk drawings that impressed me a lot at the time. Perhaps it was watching him sketch that first awakened my interest in art.”
